CALIFORNIA POPPY

The California poppy is an :abundant West Coast wild flower whose leaves and orange petals can be dried, rolled into joints, and smoked when pot is hard to come by. It is not . an opium poppy but does contain several opium-related alkaloids. chelerythrine, sanguinarine, protopine, a- and bhomochelidonine , as well as several glucosides.

A joint of this stuff will produce a mild, euphoric marijuana-like buzz for about thirty minutes or so. Light one up a little later in the day and it'll do next to nothing for your head. About one joint per day is all that anyone will find effective.   .

It is not addictive, nor does it have any negative side effects, and no laws prohibit the smoking of California poppy. There is. a California statute against plucking or mutilating this plant, the official state flower. Those caught harvesting their stash in the wild will be faced with a small misdemeanor fine.
